Before we were operating LED lights on button batteries and they weren't lasting more than about 6 hours, so this is still an improvement. I'm still happy with the Minty Boost, however. The chip apparently does have a different operating mode which gives improved efficiency at lower current draw, but I just assembled the Minty Boost as recommended by the kit's homepage. Granted, I didn't run the batteries down till they were dead, but the current had dropped to 25% of starting, so I could be waiting a long time.Īnyway, that's my assessment.
I evidently did not get the full 2850 mAh out of the batteries either (expected run time with 57% efficiency is 102 hrs). The efficiency was (0.0959)/(0.1666) = 57%, which was a little banned since I was hoping for the ~80% the chip manufacturer claims. The power drain on the high (5.0V) side was: Using two new AA batteries (3.155 V) driving the same LED with 100 ohm resistor I measured the current through the batteries and calculated power drain on the low voltage side: Since this was only 33% of my expected battery life, I was a little disappointed.
The actual current through the LED had dropped to about 3-5 mA. Afterwards, one of the batteries tested at ~0.2 V and the other was ~0.95 V and the nominal 5V output had dropped to something around 3.5-4.0 V. So I hooked up an LED and let it run for 48 hours. I was calculating the expected run time on a pair of AA's to be:Ģ AA's * 2850 mAh/AA * 3.15 Vin/5.0 Vout * 80% efficiency * 1/20 mA = 144 hours of operation! With fresh (Duracell) alkaline batteries (Minty Boost 5.01V output), a 100 ohm resistor was required to drop the current through the LED to ~19 mA to prevent the LED from burning out from overcurrent. Wireless Phones are not eligible for return.I bought 10 Minty Boosts to power (one each) high intensity LEDs (8000 mcd, 45degree illumination angle RL5-W8045 ) rated at 20 mA (3.5 V).
